Enhancement of tolerance of Avocado fruits to extreme low oxygen atmospheres following hypoxic acclimation
1996
El-Mir, M.
The effect of pre acclimation to 3 per cent O2 on the subsequent tolerance of avocado Persea americana cv. Hass fruits to 0.25 per cent and 1 per cent O2 was investigated. Preclimacteric and ripening initiated with ethylene avocado fruits were either non hypoxically pre-treated NHPT or they were hypoxically pre-treated HPT in 3 per cent O2 for 24 hours prior to exposure to 0.25 per cent and 1 per cent O2 for 1 to 3 days. Prior exposure of preclimacteric and ripening initiated avocado fruits to hypoxia greatly increased their tolerance to subsequent exposure for 1 to 3 days to 0.25 per cent and 1 per cent O2, as was assessed by monitoring physiological and biochemical changes in low oxygen and by evaluating the visual quality upon ripening of these fruits to air.
