Results of a survey carried out in Northern Italy show some characteristics in the management of the geriatric horse, objective of important investments such as active companionship but also training or genetics. Based on data processing, nutritional strategies have been proposed, dealing with exploitation of energy to protein ratio in the diet, as well as the protein and carbohydrate quality in feedstuffs. However, further scientific references on digestive and metabolic dynamics are needed for a better fulfilment of the modified nutrient requirements of over the top horse, often involved in working activities

La sintesi dei risultati dell'indagine condotta ha evidenziato alcune peculiarita' dell'allevamento del cavallo anziano, destinatario di investimenti di tipo affettivo, di addestramento e di genetica. Sulla base delle informazioni raccolte sono state proposte alcune strategie nutrizionali, che valorizzano il rapporto energia/proteine della dieta, nonche' la qualita' delle fonti proteiche e fibrose alimentari. Per meglio sostenere e supportare i modificati fabbisogni legati all'eta' fisiologica di soggetti spesso ancora in attivita', si ravvisa tuttavia l'esigenza di disporre di ulteriori riferimenti scientifici, soprattutto circa le dinamiche digestive e metaboliche del cavallo over the top
