In order to enhance genetic potentials of wheat in the western hills of Nepal, three projects maintenance breeding increased grain setting in wheat and development of high yielding varieties for low hills and river basin environments were implemented during 1998/99. Under maintenance breeding 12 cross were made among high yielding and yellow rust/foliar blight resistant genotypes. Ten F1 were also planted and F2 seeds were produced. Similarly, 9 F2 and 8 F3 were also evaluated and promising hills were selected. Under improved grain setting in wheat a number of activities; collection of local germplasm and evaluation, testing promising genotypes for yield potentials and testing selected genotypes under farmers' field and management conditions were implemented. A total of 19 germplasm were collected from far western high hills. Evaluation of 43 germplasm revealed that Paundur local had the highest spike fertility (95 percent) followed by ACC 7266 (73 percent)
