Ewe culling rate in selected flocks of Polish Merino over mainstay changes in sheep farming

Research was carried out on 4 sheep breeding farms and covered 1707 Merino ewes, incluted in the flock over 1988-90 and monitored over seven years. There was observed a low fertility rate and average prolificacy. The average culling rate amounted to 13.9 percentage and ranged from 5.6 to 19.1 percentage. The average share of sold and dead ewes amounted to 11.6 percentage, the later ranged from 2 to 8 percentage. The reasons for culling incluted: ewes getting barren - 5.6 percentage of the total number of ewes, udder disease 4.6 percentage, ageing 2.6 percentage and other reasons 1.20 percentage. An average age of cull ewes was 4.7 years
