Influence of pasture and hay-growing use on crops, their quality, and results of threat to ground water

Results of a three years study (1996-98) have been presented on the influence of nitrogen fertilization and pasture use (grazing by dairy cows) at two load levels and hay-growing use on the quantity and quality of crops and the content of nitrogenous and potassium compounds in soil solution taken from a depth of 70 cm. Obtained results demonstrate that under intensive nitrogen fertilization at a moderate load, animals grazing does not pose a risk of ground water pollution with nitrates, ammonium or potassium. Quantites of nitrate-nitrogen and ammonium-nitrogen infiltrating to ground waters on pasture with a lower load were comparable to those determined in the soil solution of a hay-growing meadow
