In the past few years, potato production in Slovenia was strongly affected by specific social economic conditions and numerous abiotic and biotic factors. In 1999, during the annual phytosanitary inspection of fields in the area of Libelice situated in the region of Carinthia, for the first time after one cyst had been found in the year 1975 we came across the extremely dangerous yellow potato nematode, Globodera rostochiensis (Woll., 1923) Behrens, 1975 which has a status of A2 Quarantine Organism in EPPO area and which was ranged in A1 Quarantine List in Slovenia. Based on an additional net sampling carried out in the threatened area we found out that the cysts of yellow potato nematode were spread in two neighbouring fields with the total surface of 3,2 ha. Due to the present situation severe safety measures basing on the set up of three different production regimes in the area where yellow potato nematode cysts had been found and on a more intensive hygiene of agricultural production in this area were taken. Using these measures we intend to prevent the spreading of the pest mentioned above into other potato production areas in Slovenia.
