Characteristics of ewes' milk composition from the summer and winter feeding periods

The research included the comparison of basic chemical composition and the contents of functional components in the milk obtained from the total of 25 ewes in the periods of winter and summer feeding. The milk obtained in the conditions of summer feeding (green fodder, hay and dry mash) and in winter (ensilage instead of green fodder) from ewes diverse in terms of genotype, lactation stage and age (the number of lactations) were clearly different from each other both in respect of basic chemical composition and the contents of functional components. The winter milk contained significantly more dry matter, protein, and especially fat (twice and much), while the lactose content was like that in the summer milk. It was also characterized by lower cholesterol and conjugated linoleic acid c9t11 (CLA) rates in the fat and generally more favourable fatty acid composition than the milk obtained in the period of summer feeding. However, due to twice as high fat content, the winter milk contained significantly more both cholesterol and CLA, as well as major acids and groups of fatty acids, the proportions of which were more favourable than in summer milk
