One of the most reasons linked to the low production of potatoes in Summer-Autumn cycle is represented by the use of ill-suited potatoes cultivars. The aim of this research was the individuation of the genotypes more suitable for this cycle. During three years (1998-2000), comparative trials have been performed with several new Italian potato genotypes and major commercial varieties, used as controls, in extra-seasonal cropping cycle (Summer-Autumn). The trials were carried out at Angri (Campania), Monopoli (Apulia), Cassibile (Sicily) and Quartu S. Elena (Sardinia): these environments represent the main zones of potato extra-seasonal cultivation in Southern Italy. The same experimental scheme, randomized block design with three replications, and protocol were used for density planting and for bio-morphological and production assessment. Total yield average was 25 t ha *[-1). The highest yields were reached in Sicily during the 1998 [44.3 t ha *[-1)] and in 2000 in Campania [36 t ha *[-1)], while the lowest was obtained in 1999, in all environments except Sardinia. The new Italian genotypes MN 290, MN 326, MN 1305 L2, MN 1115 M32, ISCI 4052, ISCI 58, ISCI 67, CS 87-36-6, CS 90-157-13 and CS 90-164-33 have provided yield statistically not different from the best commercial varieties (Spunta and Timate). All genetic materials in trial showed a low shoots/plant number and tubers/plant number, but with high unit weight of tubers
