The development of electronic commerce for value added marketing in the olive oil industry in Crete

The present survey offers an assessment of the manner in which small and medium enterprises can add value to their products through e-Commerce. In addition in order to create value added markets, the design and characteristics needed by an independent website of an olive oil entrprises are examined. Initially, the world market for olive oil, followed by the situation regarding olive oil distribution, is examined. The role which the Cretan olive oil sector plays in the Greek and the world market for olive oil is also presented. Subsequently, an insight into the main aspects of e-agribusiness on the internet and e-commerce future trends in the agribusiness sector. A description of a market survey which was carried out by means of questionnaire and was applied to the representative olive oil growers in Crete in order to identify the kind of website needed, how they prefer to do business and how they find the opportunities by going on-line is then given. Finally, conclusions were drawn as to what king of web site would be most suitable to enable olive oil entrprises to develop their business' model and add value to both the olive oil supply chain and costumers
