Ways of lead accumulation and reduction in crops produced on soils contaminated by this element

In field microplot experiments it was found that strong soil contamination by lead (Pb) reduced the yields of spring wheat by an average of 23 percent in the years 1996-98 and potato by 17 percent in the years 1999-00. Taking into account the hydrolytic activity, a double rate of liming and liming applied together with 50t/ha of manure reduced the mobility of Pb in the soil by 63 and 60 percent, respectively, eliminated the negative influence of the strong soil Pb contamination on the yields of spring wheat and potato, as well as enabled to obtain spring wheat seeds of a permissible content of Pb. Potato plants more accumulated Pb compared with those of spring wheat. None of the methods of detoxification of soils contaminated by Pb applied guaranteed to produce potato tubers of a permissible content of Pb
