Analysis of noise levels in glasshouses and tunnel greenhouses

Small agricultural machines (such as narrow-track tractors, walking tractors, motor hoes, etc.) are commonly used in glasshouses and tunnel greenhouses, together with other larger machines powered by internal combustion engines. These machines often produce high noise levels, which can be worsened by the enclosed environment. In order to evaluate the influence of the environment, some machines were tested both outdoors (in the open field) and inside the greenhouses. The indoor tests were carried out at various engine speeds, in the centre and near the walls of the greenhouses, both with windows open and closed, also evaluating the influence of the presence of vegetation. Several types of construction of glasshouses and tunnel greenhouses were taken into account, in order to study the effects of the main dimensions and of the covering materials (glass, polycarbonate, polyethylene film, etc.) on noise emissions. Noise measurements were carried out both at the operator's ear and in different areas of the greenhouses where other workers are likely to be present. The results show that very high noise levels [90 dB(A)] can easily be reached inside glasshouses and tunnel greenhouses. [Le piccole macchine agricole (come i trattori a carreggiata ridotta, i motocoltivatori, le motozappatrici) sono utilizzate di norma nelle serre e nei tunnel, unitamente ad altre macchine di maggiori dimensioni azionate da motori a combustione interna. Queste macchine producono spesso livelli elevati di rumore, che possono essere peggiorati dall'ambiente chiuso. Allo scopo di valutare l'influenza dell'ambiente, alcune macchine sono state provate sia all'aperto (in pieno campo), sia all'interno di serre. I test all'interno sono stati condotti a diverse velocita' dei motori, al centro e vicino alle pareti delle serre, con finestre aperte e chiuse, valutando pure l'influenza della presenza di vegetazione. Sono state prese in considerazione numerose tipologie costruttive di serre e tunnel, per studiare gli effetti delle dimensioni principali e dei materiali di copertura (vetro, policarbonato, film di polietilene, ecc.) sulle emissioni di rumore. Le misurazioni del rumore sono state effettuate sia all'orecchio dell'operatore, sia in aree diverse della serra in cui e' probabile che siano presenti altri lavoratori. I risultati dimostrano che nelle serre e nei tunnel possono essere facilmente raggiunti elevati livelli di rumore [90 dB(A)].
