Weed investigation growth and content of macroelements in snap bean plants under no-tillage cultivation using rye as cover crop

Rye (Secale cereale) Dankowskie cv. was seeded at the rate of 140 kg/ha in the middle of September in 1997 and 1998 in Poland. At the end of May it was sprayed with 1440 g/ha glyphosate. After the desiccation of rye, as well as on traditionally cultivated plots, snap bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris) cv. Laura were seeded. No-tillage cultivation with plant cover mulch significantly decreased weed infestation during 3 weeks after seeding. Under no-tillage cultivation bean plants were smaller and produced a significantly lower yield of pods. The method of cultivation did not influence the length of pods and the diameter of pods was smaller in no-tillage plots in the first year of study. The P, K and Mg content in bean leaves was not affected by the method of cultivation. However, the N content was significantly higher and the Ca content significantly lower in leaves from no-tillage cultivation
