Yielding and some quality properties of chinese cabbage heads as affected by plant density

Experiments were led at the Resaerch Institute of Vegetable Crops in 1997-99 with 2 cultivars of Chinese cabbage: Kingdom F1 and Morillo F1 applying 5 plant densities (4, 8, 12, 16 and 29 plants/square m). Obtained results indicated, that total yield increased with plant density, by significant increase was observed up to 16 plants/square m. Marketable yield significantly increased only up to 8 plants/square m. Plant density exceeding 12 plants/square m caused significantly decrease of marketable yield. Considering marketable yield, mean weight of marketable head and other characters, it can be stated that in autumn cultivation under favourable growing conditions, optimal plant density would be 12-16 plants/square m for intensively growing cultivars e.g. Kingdom F1, and 9-12 plants/square m for less vigorous cultivars e.g. Morillo F1. With density of 12-16 plants/square m some decrease in marketable yield should be excepted, but higher number of heads with size desired at our market, could be harvested. Further increase of plant density would be economically not justified
