Farm technical efficiency in pre- and post-accession Slovenia: the importance of size and subsidies
2009
Bojnec, Stefan | Latruffe, Laure
In this paper we investigate Slovenian (individual) farms’ technical efficiency, and in particular its determinants, pre- and post-accession. As a background, we present the evolution of the farming structures and the agricultural policy in both periods. The pre-accession efficiency analysis is based on the few existing studies, while we present new results for the post-accession period. To our knowledge, no studies about farm performance exist for post-accession Central and Eastern European countries. In addition to the contribution to this part of research, our study sheds light on the links between farms’ efficiency, farms’ size and public support provided to farms, in Slovenia, in order to draw some insights into why the farming structures are still so small in the country.
