The production of crude sunflower oil consists of several stages of processing. A very important stage in the processing of sunflower seed is the preparation of sunflower seeds, ie the drying and cleaning of mercantile sunflower. This technological operation produces a sunflower grain of processing quality with optimal moisture and minimal impurity. The next important stage of sunflower seed processing is sunflower seeds dehulling and separation of hull from the dehulled material. After dehulling and separation of the hull from the material, it is followed by conditioning the material to allow for more efficient pressing and to minimize the amount of oil content in the cake. In the production of crude sunflower oil in industrial plants, the pressed oil makes up more than four fifths of crude sunflower oil, while the rest of the crude oil is obtained by extracting the cake with a solvent n-hexane. Waxes and phosphatides, which are an integral part of sunflower seeds after processing, end up in crude sunflower oil and their content affects the losses during the refining of crude sunflower oil. This paper presents how the content of waxes and phosphatides changes and to what extent, during various technological operations of filtration in the production of crude sunflower oil. The content of waxes, phosphatides, moisture and oil sludge is shown before and after filtration on AMA filters, as well as before and after filtration/clarification on decanter.
