Rural development from a territorial perspective : case studies in Asia and Latin America

The characteristics of available natural resources and level of community driven development influence the role of agriculture in the reduction of rural poverty. This report considers contexts and variables in economic transformation and poverty reduction in rural poor households by examining five territories in four countries of Asia and Latin America that have experienced substantial reductions in poverty. By taking different paths to achieve this transformation, different roles for agriculture and other economic activities are implied. Dominant strategies are diversification and or intensification of production, and or migration.
