Over 150,000 Indian cotton farmers have committed suicide. Issues like corporate farming, contract farming, retailing in agro-industrial products by corporations, special economic zones (SEZs) and other external interventions are adding to the woes of farmers. The land reforms programme is in total disarray. The Using Diversity Awards Programme project has built a foundation for the revival of mixed cropping systems in different regions of India. Next steps should consist of systematic efforts to strengthen farmer-led initiatives for promotion of mixed cropping systems. The report outlines some research study initiatives.
