One of the main concerns of horticulturists in the world is the preservation of biological diversity — using native plants, including different plant species in cultivation systems and using what is grown for versatile purposes. Such cultivation of Latvian local sweet cherries has both opportunities and challenges. Since the 90s of the last century, the Latvian State Forest Research Institute “Silava” has been conducting research on the suitability of local sweet cherries for wood cultivation, several projects have been implemented and sweet cherry plantations have been established for wood production. In 2020, LSFRI “Silava” (leading partner) together with the Institute of Horticulture (IH) and SIA "Palus" launched the Rural Development Programme cooperation project “Approbation of sweet cherry (Cerasus avium Moench. syn. Prunus avium L.) propagation technologies and selection of the most promising clones for productive for the establishment of timber plantations in the climatic conditions of Latvia” in order to use the local sweet cherries more fully and more diversely. Within the framework of the project, a survey of sweet cherry plantations and the selection of the best clones, the development of the microclonal and leafy cuttings propagation method — approbation for sweet cherries, the study of juvenile rapid growth and winter hardiness of sweet cherries are taking place. The IH genetic resource collection maintains sweet cherries with good and regular yields.
