Knowledge sharing and organizational learning on outcomes-based education among faculty members in a private university in the Philippines

This study sought to analyze the contribution of knowledge sharing to organizational learning on outcomes-based education (OBE) among faculty members in a private higher education institution in the Philippines. Using the descriptive-case study design, this study involved 111 faculty members, who were mostly female, middle-aged, and working in the institution for at least 10 years. They were teaching subjects mostly in the medical and allied fields and they employed lectures, group work, and demonstration as teaching methods. A great majority of the faculty members had only moderate level of knowledge on OBE, but they had highly positive attitudes and practices regarding OBE. In terms of knowledge sharing behavior, the faculty members were more OBE-related knowledge seekers than knowledge donors. Attitudes and practices had a significant linear relationship with knowledge sharing behavior. Analysis of the respondents' social networks revealed a generally simple, unidimensional, and leader-centered knowledge seeking, knowledge donating, and problem ties. The knowledge seeking ties showed most individuals or nodes having only one tie and with no reciprocated interaction. Almost similar findings were found when it came to donating of OBE-related information, but results showed more reciprocated interactions. The network showed no isolates; hence, members, at least at one point, had shared knowledge with others within the network. The problem ties showed almost all faculty members within the network sought help on OBE-related problems from other faculty members. The respondents positively perceived that there was organizational learning on OBE in the institution. Knowledge sharing on OBE positively affected organizational learning. The resultant model on knowledge sharing on OBE to enhance organizational learning on OBE was proposed and recommended for testing and validating for wider applicability and utility.
