For more than 100 years, breeding work of cereals continues in all three Baltic countries – Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The main objectives for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) breeding are winter hardiness, high yield and grain quality suitable for processor’s requirements, also resistance to diseases and climatic changes. In order to evaluate the economically useful properties, trial with 12 winter wheat varieties and perspective breeding lines, both created in the Baltic States (except standard ‘Skagen’), was set up at the Stende Research Centre during 2022/2023. One year results showed that winter wheat varieties selected in the Baltic countries are sufficiently winter-hardy and with a good adaptability even in changing meteorological conditions, with high grain yield and grain quality suitable for various uses.
