Microelements are present in soil in small amounts and they are essential for different biochemical and physiological proceses in plants; while heavy metals represent trace elements, a group of elements that are necessary in small quantities for normal growth and development of plants but if they are present in higher amounts, they can be harmfull. The importance of organic matter for soils is multiple; it is important for the protection of physical soil properties; organic matter is pool of organic carbon; and it is source of the essential elements for plant nutrition. The paper outlines the ways of the transfer of microelements and heavy metals to the soil by manure, compost, digestate, industrial organic waste and by biosolids. It is shown the content of the microelements and heavy metals in organic fertilizers from different countries and from the Republic of Serbia. The positive effect of the apllication of organic fertilizers on the availability of essential elements and improvement of physical, chemical and biological soil properties is significant. However, consequences of the use of organic materials might be accumulation of heavy metals. In order to avoid environmental contamination by heavy metals, the control of organic fertilizer quality is important, as a preventive measure in order to establish sustainable agriculture production.
