Hirurška terapija rascepa nepca kod pasa – prikaz slučaja | Surgical therapy of cleft palate in dogs - case report

Cleft palate in dogs is a significant health problem. This disease is congenital deformity, when in certain period of development of the fetus there is no complete adhesion of the palatal projections of the upper jaw and closure of the dorsal arch of the oral cavity. From a clinical point of view, cleft palate is very easy to diagnose because it manifests immediately after the birth of dogs. Dogs have difficulty consuming food, and due to the compromised act of ingestion, food can end up in lower respiratory tract and can lead to aspiration pneumonia and death of the animal. This paper presents two surgical techniques for cleft palate therapy in dogs. The first method involved the use of a double flap surgical technique, while the second method involved the use of a rotational flap surgical technique. The obtained results indicate that the surgical technique of rotational flap provides greater mechanical strength to the opposing parts of the mucosa of the hard palate, while the use of double flap surgical technique has a greater possibility of wound dehiscence.
