"In January 1986, a conference was held in Goa, India, the subject of which was biodeterioration. The problems created by biofoulers and the strategies to control these organisms comprised a major portion of the program. The papers in the present volume were written by the participants in the Indo-United States meeting on Recent Developments in Biofouling Control held in Bangalore, India in July 1992. The major thrust of the 1992 conference was to provide an overview of the developments since 1986 in the control of biofouling. The financial burden worldwide due to fouling organisms is staggering. Not only must we deal with the deleterious effects of fouling organisms on structures such as piers, ships, and bridges, but we also have to face the costs of the efforts to reduce, if not eliminate, the problem. These costs are a major concern to industry and governments as well as to the individual whose livelihood may be threatened by these organisms." "The conference had a plenary session and five sessions of talks given by invited participants. The topics were: microfouling: biology and control; macrofouling: biological and biochemical clues for control; and performance of antifouling coatings: nontoxic antifouling agents/new inhibitors, low energy and controlled release coatings, and testing." "While notable progress is being made in our efforts to control biofouling, the organizers and participants are hopeful that the enthusiastic discussion generated by the presentations will ultimately provide answers to the many questions raised at this conference that are still begging for answers."--Jacket.
