Clifford D. Carpenter (1897-1965) received a master of science degree from the University of Kansas and a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cornell University. In 1923, Carpenter established the first private veterinary practice in America exclusively for poultry. He operated this practice until 1935. From 1935 to 1944, he worked in an industry veterinary practice. As president of the Institute of American Poultry Industries from 1944 to 1958, he led the rapidly growing and changing poultry industry. He was a delegate and chairman of the U.S. participation committees to the 9th, 11th, and 12th World's Poultry Congresses. In 1968, he was elected to the American Poultry Historical Society Poultry Hall of Fame.
The three personal letters to Jane Carpenter were found in an antique store and subsequently donated to the Special Collections of the National Agricultural Library in 2012.
