Crop-water production functions and economic implications for the Texas High Plains region
1982
Hoyt, P.G.
Extract: Crop-water production functions are estimated by growth stage for corn, sorghum and wheat grown in the Texas High Plains region. An economic analysis of these production functions provides useful information for farm level irrigation decisions to increase profits and for water conservation policy to lengthen the life of the Ogallala aquifer. The analysis indicates very little change in profit maximizing water quantities reaching the plant in response to changes in crop or water prices. Irrigation water reductions of up to 20 percent have very little effect on profits per acre and thus could be used to extend aquifer life.
