Weiss, Donald H.
Abstract: Practical guidelines for preparing and delivering well-organized, persuasive oral presentations are outlined in this booklet that is part of the Successful Office Skills Series from the American Management Association. Effective planning for a sp eech begins with defining a goal and general topic, and continues with structuring the presentation to meet audience needs and expectations. Definitions and appropriate uses of three model formats for structuring and developing presentations--exposition, and rhetoric--are presented. Common fallacies of deduction and inductive reasoning, and misuses of emotional appeals are identified. Suggestions are offered for adapting content and language to a specific audience, for encouraging audience involvement in the presentation, and for using audiovisual aids to enhance the overall message.
