Contrasts and similarities of contemporary and 19th century development experiences
1983
Adelman, I. | Morris, C.T.
Extract: The purpose of this paper is to restudy economic history using the Chenery cross-country methodology. It is, perhaps, not inappropriate that the authors do so since one of the authors was the first in a long line of Chenery coauthors, which includes two of the three editors of the present Festschrift, to repeat the study of "Patterns" using a conceptually better data base. This paper is part of a comparative study of institutional change and economic growth in the 19th Century. The authors focus here only on the impact of trade and investment on the structure and pace of economic change. The data, developed over 20 years of research especially for the larger study, are classificatory indicators summarizing 35 socioeconomic and political traits of 23 countries for three subperiods between 1850 and 1914.
