Abstract: The implications of alcohol use for persons with diabetes mellitus are briefly examined in this brochure from the International Diabetes Center. The brochure is designed to help diabetics make an informed personal decision about alcohol use. Background information is provided on the absorption, metabolism, and caloric contribution of alcohol. The mechanism by which alcohol lowers the blood glucose level and enhance the effects of insulin is explained. The risks of hypoglycemia following alcohol use are described. Guidelines are presented related to the occasional use of alcoholic beverages, including 1) recommended quantity limits for alcohol consumption, 2) quantities of different alcoholic beverages that make up an alcohol "equivalent", and 3) counting the calories from alcoholic beverages is recommended only for diabetics whose blood glucose levels are well-controlled. Conditions that indicate that alcohol should not be used are identified. A table provides information on the alcohol, carbohydrate, and caloric content of alcoholic beverages and the number and type of food group exchanges for non-insulin dependent diabetics. (aje).
