This report relates the impact that the International Agricultural Research Centres (IARCs) have had on the National Agricultural Research System (NARS) and agricultural production in Guatemala. In general, the NARS scientists of Guatemala believe that the flow of information from the centres is good and useful. The exchange of genetic material with the centres constitutes the backbone of their programs. The centres are doing the basic research and crosses, with adaptation trials and further selection by the NARS. Moreover, the work of the centres in enhancing the human capital of the NARS scientists has been rated as invaluable. Without the training most received from the centres they could not have undertaken the research that is now their responsibility. In addition, the Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (ICTA) apreciates the aid it gets from the centres in the form of equipment, supplies, etc. and acknowledges that without this aid many programs would have failed or years of work would have been lost. Nevertheless, although the IARCs have had a positive impact, there are some limitations and problems within the NARS which could affect the potential impact of its collaboration with the IARCs.
