Abstract: A study of participants in the Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) that was conducted in local agencies in California is summarized in this report by the Department of Health Services. Certificates of WIC Eligibility (CWE) were examined for demographic, programmatic, and nutritional characteristics of participants. Aspects of study methods that are described include local agency selection, record selection and rejection, and data processing. Variables analyzed for pregnant women included ethnic background, age, trimester of pregnancy at entry into the program, provider and cost of prenatal care, and risk classification categories. Data collected from infants' and children's records included ethnic background, age, reason for program termination, and nutritional risks (particularly brochemical and anthropometric). One limitation of the study results is that the sample was not representative of all WIC participants since agencies were not randomly selected and some records were rejected due to incompleteness of data. A number of tables, figures, and appendices were used to present data on participant characteristics. Information collected during the study may be useful to state and individual agencies for activities such as staff training, program outreach and follow-up, nutrition education, planning, monitoring, and program evaluation.
