The purpose of this book is to present to the reader the most salient and comprehensive information available on the action of dietary restriction on the retardation of aging by addressing its role in various physiological systems and pathologies. Reviews current intrinsic and extrinsic theories and discredited theories of aging, and evaluates the proposed major molecular mechanisms of dietary restriction; examines neuroendocrine involvement in the retardation of aging by dietary restriction; examines the decline of protein turnover with age and the modulation of this function by dietary restriction; addresses alteration of the immune system associated with the progressive decline of immune responsiveness to exogenous antigens during senescence; etc.
