Robert Morris Smith was affiliated with the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. The National Chicken of Tomorrow contest was created by the director of research of the A&P Food Stores, Howard Castner Pierce. In response to the mid-1940s beef shortage, Pierce suggested the poultry industry improve chickens grown for meat consumption, instead of focusing on egg production. He offered a $10,000 prize for development of the best meat-type chicken. Consequently, a National Chicken of Tomorrow committee was formed and a breeding and feeding program established. Forty-four states initially participated in the program, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The result of this program was an improved chicken product for consumers and more efficient methods to raise chickens for poultry breeders. (See also the Howard Castner Pierce Papers, collection number 128.).
