Abstract: The nutritional status of the human body affects its susceptibility to disease, and, conversely, the presence of disease affects nutritional status. The interrelationships of metabolic, biochemical, hormonal and nutritional balances in various states of health and disease are comprehensively presented in terms of the body systems (hematopoietic, nervous, endocrine, musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal), specific organs (liver, heart and kidney), diseases (cancer and infections), other conditions (obesity, alcoholism and aging), and megavitamin therapy and food fads. The causes, effects, and prevention of nutrient deficiencies as they relate to various conditions and age groups are explored, as are factors affecting digestion, absorption and utilization of all the essential nutritional requirements. Some of the specific topics address the nutritional effects of hepatic or cardiac failure, drug-nutrient interactions, dietary fat and several types of cancer, dietary factors relating to diabetes, effects of ethanol on nutrient metabolism, risks and treatment of obesity, hypertension, and chronic renal failure.
