Abstract: Laboratory equipment and procedures used in hemoglobin, hematocrit, and cholesterol analyses are presented in this manual from the Arizona Department of Health Services. The importance of quality assurance in producing accurate and reproducible results, and factors responsible for poor test results are discussed. Key laboratory and testing terms are defined. Laboratory notebook organization is divided into the following areas: client results, linearity check/standard curve, controls, equipment maintenance, and personnel. Detailed procedures are outlined for obtaining hemoglobin and hematocrit results on controls and client samples. Possible explanations and recommended actions are provided for results that differ from expected values. Photographs a re included of hemoglobin equipment and a hematocrit centrifuge.

A preventive maintenance schedule of daily, weekly, and monthly checks is proposed for laboratory equipment (i.e. colorimeter, microhematocrit centrifuge). The following sample forms are included: precision study record, nutrition program cholesterol screening, and laboratory quality assurance record.
