Abstract: A comprehensive guide for human resource professionals describes how to prepare people for entering new managerial positions, how to motivate them to succeed in their new positions, and how to overcome barriers to career development. A variety of effective human resource development strategies and programs for improving the performance and job satisfaction of managers at all levels are presented and discussed. The text analyzes the expectations and attitudes of new managers using a variety of examples, and describes specific problems, sources of stress and challenges. Techniques for assessing motivations, strengths, weaknesses, needs, and interests of new managers are described. Recommended techniques for motivating managers also are covered. (wz).
