The American Poultry Historical Society (APHS) was organized in 1952. According to the book, American Poultry History 1823-1973, "The purpose of the [society] is to find, collect, and preserve records, pictures, materials and objects connected with the development of the poultry industry and to make available its great history to this and future generations, and to honor or recognize persons for outstanding achievement or leadership." The society (and its associated Hall of Fame, established in 1954) was modeled on similar developments in the dairy industry. The APHS formed an independent and inclusive organization to serve all types of interest in the poultry industry, from individual poultry fanciers to commercial breeders.
