Abstract: The latest information on sodium content of foods has been collected from USDA data, health professionals, food editors, food manufacturers, fast food chains, and biochemists as an aid to those needing to reduce sodium intake. The information is presented in 5 sections: the shopping guide, which can be used in meal planning, food selection, and health consultations; the cooking guide, which provides comparisons of sodium content between commercially prepared products and home made dishes, flavoring alternatives, and recipes; the dining out guide, which lists suggestions for salt free foods and sodium content of fast foods; the drug store guide, which alerts consumers to the sodium content of antacids, laxatives, cough medicines, etc.; and the health guide, which answers consumers' questions on diet and blood pressure. The entire book is color coded like a traffic signal--green for go (low sodium), yellow for caution (moderate sodium), and red for stop (high sodium).
