Report of the Working Group on Critical Patient Behaviors in the Dietary Management of High Blood Pressure

Abstract: A 10-step outline of patient behaviors and skills for controlling sodium intake and weight is presented as an aid to counselors on dietary management. The 10 steps include: acknowledge the disease; consider the effectiveness of dietary measures; assess current dietary influences; acknowledge that change is long term; develop a strategy and set goals; plan for each change; act to change; assess the success of each change; assess the attainment of blood pressure goal; and maintain diet changes. The focus is on behavior changes; appendices present specific information about knowledge and skills that are necessary for dietary management. (rkm).
