The hemicellulose component of dietary fiber

On a fixed diet of known fiber content, the digestion of hemicellulose in subjects with an ileostomy and subjects with healthy small and large bowel is discussed. Volunteers (n = 11) were given a fixed known diet for 10 days. After four days, two total fecal collections of 3 days each were made, and the feces were analyzed for fiber. The percent of hemicellulose digestion occurred as follows: women ileostomy subjects, 65%; male ileostomy subjects, 83%; intact women subjects, 97%; and intact men subjects, 95%. Monosaccharide compositions suggest that an arabinoxylan hemicellulose from cereals is not digested in the small bowel and only partially digested in the large bowel. Therefore, arabinoxylans from cereals are the significant component of dietary fiber.
