Genetic Variability Studies for Yield and Its Component Traits in Inter Sub Specific Ril Population of Blackgram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper)

Blackgram is an important pulse crop occupying unique position in Indian agriculture. It has low genetic variability, low harvest index and no significant improvement in its productivity till date. An inter subspecific mapping population (RILs) was developed by crossing VBN(Bg) 4 xVigna mungo var. silvestris 22/2 by single seed decent method. The genetic variability parameters were studied in a mapping population consisted of 195 RILs and their parents. Analysis of variance revealed high significant values for all the 11 characters studied. Phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) was higher than genotype coefficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters indicating the influence of environment on the characters. However, GCV was foundto be high forthe traits like single plant yield, number of branches per plant and number of pods per plant. The high heritability was exhibited for hundred seed weight, single plant yield, plant height, days to maturity, number of pods per plant, days to 50% flowering and number of branches per plant. The high heritability coupledwith high genetic advance aspercentage of mean was found in hundred seed weight followed by single plant yield, plant height, number of pods per plant and number of branches per plant. Thus, these characters may serve as effective selection parameters during breeding programme for the improvement of blackgram productivity. The mapping population could be used for mapping of genes for important traits.
