Computer prediction of RNA secondary structures

A secondary structure model for the conformation of an RNA molecule is presented. A mathematical algorithm is introduced which solves the problem of identifying a minimum energy structure. Nevertheless, the problem as posed is underdetermined and many different solutions can exist close to the minimum energy. Several existing and proposed methods of predicting alternate solutions are discussed, and various examples are given.
