A letter to the editor questions certain aspects of an article written about fetal alcohol syndrome. The writer points to the number of unresolved questions concerning the specificity of ethanol as the teratogenic agent that causes growth and behavior disorders in the offspring of female alcohol abusers. The author's reply to the letter points to one fundamental fact: a large number of disorders and malformations will be prevented through maternal avoidance of heavy liquor consumption during pregnancy.
