Feeding the premature infant human milk or an artificial formula
1977
Heird, William C.
Several studies related to optimal nutritional management for premature infants are reviewed. Reasons are stated for increased interest in the use of human milk. Recent developments related to the quality and quantity of protein intake are discussed. Artificial formula is higher in protein, but higher protein intake may not be advantageous for a premature infant. A major question is whether nonnutritional factors of human milk feeding outweigh the provision of more nutrients in other ways.
