Nutrition labelling in the Netherlands

Recent activities in nutrition labeling recommendations in the Netherlands to promote the nutrition labeling of foods discussed. A uniform label (termed a "nutrition indicator") is described which provides information on the nutritional value of food products at different specified levels. The standardized style of label being introduced is illustrated. It was decided that the basic label should contain information per unit weight on: energy content; levels of fat, protein, and carbohydrate; the amount of sugar in the carbohydrate; the saturated fat and linoleic acid content in the fat; the amount of salt; and the levels of 4 nutrients (Ca, Fe, and vitamins B1 and C). Dietary cholesterol and fiber not recommended for listing at the present. Information on label preparation and regulations also is presented.(wz)
