Ecological pest control of potato in Bulgaria

The Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) is the major economically important pest of potato production. A wide range of insecticides has been applied to control it. In order to decrease their use, especially in biologically and economically oriented farms, alternative decisions have been searched to solve this serious problem. During the past years, special attention has been paid to secondary plant metabolites as resources having a sensible effect on the physiological condition and behavior of the pest population dynamics. The aim of the present research was to study the effect of alcohol-water extracts from oak trees (Quercus alba L.) on feeding of Colorado potato beetle larvae. The effects of these extracts on nutrition, growth and development of the larvae were studied. Mathematical modeling of concentration dose-effect was conducted. It was concluded that the alcohol and water extracts of the Oak tree decreased feeding, growth and development of Colorado potato beetle larvae. Use of water extracts could lead to economically sound plant protection against Colorado potato beetle.
