Temperature effects upon inflorescence and seed development in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.)
1971
Bean, E.W.
The effects of three temperatures 15, 20, and 25 °C upon inflorescence and seed development in tall fescue ( Festuca arundinacea Schreb) between inflorescence emergence and seed maturity were studied. Increasing temperature over this range reduced culm length and the number of florets per spikelet, hastened the onset of anthesis and pollen release, increased relative growth-rate of the florets 9 days after peak anthesis, reduced the period of seed development and 1000 seed weight No large effects of temperature upon the percentage of florets setting seed were found. The practical implications of these results are discussed.
