Heterogeneous data structures in federal inter-state projects for 3D geological and/or groundwater modelling often face significant challenges. To address and overcome these challenges, three cross-border areas in Germany have been chosen for a pilot study. Geologically, the areas are located in the Upper Rhine Graben and the Hanau-Seligenstädt Basin. Borehole data provided by the geological surveys have been compared and synthesized according to technical and content-related criteria. Synthesized data were then parameterized with defined classes of hydraulic conductivity and interpolated in 3D space, aiming to spatially describe the hydraulic conductivity. In addition, for one subsection, borehole data were interpreted within a common lithostratigraphic context for modelling Quaternary horizons across federal state borders. A semi-automated synthesis of petrographic information worked for most of the geological layers. Results reveal the occurrence of high permeability layers in the first 40 meters below ground surface and low permeability layers in the following 30 meters. The permeability model correlates well with modelled Quaternary horizons.
