A brief overview discusses the problem of elderly nutrition associated with the increasing elderly population in the US, and suggests possible contributions that nutrition research might make to resolving this problem. The increase in the number of elderly people has been brought about by the increase in life expentancy due to medical and health care advances. This population increase will have a substantial impact on US social structure and economic resources, which will be affected by the high cost of health care in this population. Health promotion through improved nutrition can reduce health care costs and improve the quality of life. It is concluded that research should focus on the uses of nutrition for improving the quality of life for the elderly, and that the role of nutrition in the pathogenesis of functional deteriorations should be identified so that effective control measures can be instituted.
