Sucrose is recommended as an alternative source of fuel for runners who use starchy carbohydrate-laden foods for energy. The metabolism of carbohydrates is explained. Purification of sugar from natural sources does not alter it as a food, but there is prejudice against it as unnatural. It is nutritionally about the same as brown sugar and honey. The only clearly shown danger of sugar is in dental caries, and a sugar excess without exercise leads to obesity.
