Santra, A. | Karim, S.A.
Growth performance, feed conversion efficiency and nutrient utilization of lambs of Malpura, Awassi x Malpura (AM) and A x AM (Awassi 75%, Malpura 25%) genetic groups weaned at 90 days of age were evaluated. Lambs of A x AM genetic group attained 25 kg target finishing weight in 54 days of intensive feeding while lambs of AM and Malpura genetic group required 64 and 79 days, respectively. The feed conversion efficiency was favorable in A x AM genetic group compared to A and AM, whereas daily dry matter intake and nutrient utilization were similar. The lambs in all three groups were in positive nitrogen balance with similar nitrogen retention efficiency (38.3%). Lambs of Malpura, AM and A x AM genetic groups in active phase of growth consumed 83.9 g DM, 8.3 g DCP and 242.9 kcal DE/kg W0.75 for an average daily gain of 143 g. It is concluded that growth performance and feed conversion efficiency favors Awassi crosses over Malpura lambs.
